Ask Kate: "Detox" Teas and Cleanses

Jul 9, 2025 ·

Sharing is caring!

I've been on social media for 5+ years and watched nutrition trends explode. Every week, I'm answering a real question using science, real-life experience, and expert insight because your health deserves more than a viral soundbite.

I've been getting SO many questions about detox teas lately - especially with all those influencer posts promising quick fixes. Spoiler alert: your body is way smarter than any Instagram ad gives it credit for!

With all the detox teas, tips, and hacks out there, it may be forgotten that your body is designed to detox itself 24/7. That’s right! Your body is an incredibly sophisticated system that makes any detox tea look like child’s play.

TL;DR: Your body naturally detoxes through liver, kidneys, lungs, and skin

Detox teas cause temporary water weight loss via laxatives/diuretics

No scientific evidence supports commercial detox claims

Serious side effects include liver failure and electrolyte imbalances

Myth vs. Reality

  • Myth: Detox teas eliminate toxins
  • Fact: Your liver and kidneys already do this continuously
  • Myth: Rapid weight loss means fat burning
  • Fact: It's temporary water weight that returns quickly

How Your Natural Detox Works

  • 1. Liver: Processes toxins through 3-phase enzyme system
  • 2. Kidneys: Filter 180L of blood daily
  • 3. Lungs: Eliminate compounds through breathing
  • 4. Skin/Lymph: Additional waste elimination pathways

Disclaimer: This column provides general nutrition information and is not intended as medical advice or to replace consultation with qualified healthcare professionals. The information presented is based on current research, my educational background as a dietetics student, and clinical observations, but individual needs vary greatly. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your diet, especially if you have existing health conditions.

The liver has three distinct phases of detoxification. Phase I uses enzymes to break down toxins, Phase II adds molecules like glutathione to make them water-soluble, and Phase III actively pumps everything out. Your kidneys filter out about 180 liters of blood daily. That’s roughly 47 gallons! Your lungs constantly eliminate compounds through breathing, while your skin and lymphatic system contribute to this cleaning process, too.

Did you know the detox industry generates $51 billion annually, but here’s the kicker: there’s not a single peer-reviewed study showing that commercial detox products are effective for toxin elimination.

Let me break down what’s actually in these expensive teas. Senna is a stimulant laxative that works by irritating the colon. It’s FDA-approved for constipation. Dandelion has mild diuretic properties, although there are not many human studies on this. Milk thistle does have some promising research for liver support, but oral bioavailability is only at about 23%, so you’re not getting much of the active compounds in a tea.

Your individual health status may also affect how these products might impact you. People with liver conditions, kidney disease, or those taking medications face serious risks. Please keep in mind that senna can also interfere with birth control pills and blood thinners.

I also need to talk about some potential side effects for a moment. There are  multiple cases of dangerous electrolyte imbalances that have been documented, too, when consuming detox teas. There have even been cases of liver failure from drinking detox tea.

So, what’s the right answer? Support your body’s natural detox systems instead of trying to replace them. Stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, get quality sleep, exercise, and take care of yourself. These are evidence-based ways to optimize the detox systems you already have!
