Chocolate-Dipped Apple Christmas Trees (Gluten-Free)

There's something about December that makes me crave festive snacks that look impressive but don't keep me in the kitchen for hours. These chocolate-dipped apple Christmas trees hit that sweet spot perfectly. They're adorable, take about 15 minutes from start to finish.

Here's the trick that makes these actually work: patting the apple slices completely dry before you dip them. I know it seems like an extra step you could skip, but trust me on this one. Wet apples and melted chocolate are enemies. One quick pass with a paper towel means your chocolate coating stays smooth and glossy instead of seizing up into a grainy mess. That's the kind of small adjustment that separates a recipe that works from one that frustrates you.

I've been making variations of chocolate covered apple slices for over a decade now (gluten-free life taught me to get creative with snacks early on), and as a future Registered Dietitian, I love that this one keeps the natural sweetness and crunch of fresh apples front and center. The chocolate is more of an accent than the main event, which means you get a treat that actually tastes refreshing instead of heavy.

These Christmas trees are perfect for holiday parties, kid-friendly entertaining, or just making a regular Tuesday feel a little more special. And if you're looking for more festive treats that come together quickly, you'll love my Easy Chocolate Dipped Watermelon Bites (same concept, summer version) or my 3-Ingredient Strawberry Frozen Yogurt for something cold and fruity.

Why This Easy Christmas Treat Works

The simplicity here is the whole point. You're working with fresh, crisp apples that don't need much help to taste good. The chocolate adds richness and turns this into something that feels like dessert, while the sprinkles make it unmistakably festive. This is the kind of recipe where quality ingredients matter because there's nowhere to hide. Use the crispest Granny Smith apples you can find, and spring for good chocolate chips that melt smoothly.

The coconut oil mixed into the chocolate is non-negotiable if you want a glossy, dippable consistency. It thins the chocolate just enough to coat the apples evenly without creating thick, clunky layers. If you've ever tried dipping fruit in straight-up melted chocolate and ended up with a lumpy disaster, this is your fix.

What Makes This a Kid-Friendly Christmas Treat

Kids love these because they get to be part of the decorating process. The assembly is simple enough that even younger children can help arrange the apple slices into tree shapes and add sprinkles. Plus, unlike whole chocolate-covered apples that can be messy and hard to bite into, these sliced versions are easy to eat.

If you're bringing these to a classroom party or looking for Christmas treats for kids to make at home, this recipe checks every box. It's naturally gluten-free (just verify your chocolate chips and sprinkles), uses real fruit, and comes together so quickly that kids won't lose interest halfway through.

Equipment

You don't need anything fancy for this recipe, but having the right basics makes the process smoother.

  • Microwave-safe bowl - For melting the chocolate evenly without scorching it. I use glass mixing bowls that can go from microwave to counter without issue.
  • Baking sheet - A half sheet pan lined with parchment paper gives you plenty of space to arrange your trees as you build them.
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat - Prevents sticking and makes cleanup effortless. I'm a big fan of reusable silicone mats for anything involving melted chocolate.
  • Sharp knife - For slicing apples into thin, even wedges. A good pair of kitchen shears also comes in handy if you want to trim any uneven edges.
  • Paper towels - Essential for drying those apple slices before dipping.

A Gluten-Free Christmas Dessert Everyone Will Love

This recipe is naturally gluten-free as long as you use certified gluten-free chocolate chips and sprinkles. Unlike many Christmas desserts that rely on cookies or cake bases, these chocolate-covered apple trees let the fruit shine through. They're one of those rare gluten-free Christmas treats that doesn't require specialty flours or complicated substitutions.

If you're bringing these to a party where some guests have dietary restrictions, you can feel confident serving them. Just double-check your chocolate and sprinkle labels to ensure they're certified gluten-free.

Why These Make Perfect Holiday Snacks for Kids

Unlike elaborate Christmas desserts that require precise measurements and baking times, these apple trees are forgiving. If a child adds too many sprinkles or the chocolate drizzle isn't perfectly centered, it still looks festive and tastes delicious. That's the beauty of this no-bake Christmas dessert approach.

I've found that when kids help make their own snacks, they're more likely to actually eat them. Something about the ownership factor. These work beautifully for classroom parties, playdate activities, or just a fun weekend project at home.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

These chocolate-dipped apple Christmas trees are genuinely best enjoyed fresh, ideally within 2-3 hours of making them. The apples stay crispest this way, and the chocolate maintains its snap. That said, if you need to prep ahead for a party, here's what works:

Make them up to 4 hours in advance and store them in a single layer in the refrigerator, uncovered. Any longer and the apples start releasing moisture, which can make the chocolate coating look dull or cause the apples to brown at the edges despite the chocolate barrier.

If you're really pressed for time, you can slice the apples and store them in a bowl of water with a squeeze of lemon juice for up to 2 hours before assembling. Just make sure you drain and thoroughly pat them dry before dipping.

Festive Christmas Dessert Variations

Once you've mastered the basic technique, there are endless ways to customize these chocolate apple tree snacks:

White Chocolate Version: Use white chocolate chips instead of dark or semisweet. The contrast between the green apple and white chocolate is stunning, and you can tint the white chocolate with red or green food coloring for an even more festive look.

Peppermint Twist: Crush candy canes and sprinkle them over the wet chocolate instead of (or in addition to) regular sprinkles. The mint flavor pairs beautifully with both apples and chocolate.

Nut Butter Drizzle: For added protein and richness, drizzle melted almond or peanut butter over the chocolate before it sets. Just make sure any nut products are clearly labeled if you're serving to a group.

Different Apple Varieties: While Granny Smith is my go-to for its tartness and firm texture, Honeycrisp or Pink Lady apples also work well. Just avoid softer varieties like Red Delicious, which can get mushy quickly.

Servings 12 christmas trees

Equipment

  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 2 large green apples Granny Smith works best
  • 1 cup chocolate chips dark, semisweet, or white - shop chocolate chips
  • 1 –2 teaspoons coconut oil to help the chocolate melt smoothly
  • Holiday sprinkles red and green
  • Optional: edible stars edible pearls, or other festive decorations

Instructions

  • Prep the apples: Slice apples into thin wedges, about ¼ inch thick. Pat each slice completely dry with a paper towel. This step is crucial for getting the chocolate to stick properly.
  • Melt the chocolate: Add chocolate chips and coconut oil to a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20–30 second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth and glossy. Don't rush this step or you'll end up with seized chocolate.
  • Assemble the trees: On a parchment-lined baking sheet, arrange 3–4 apple slices in a staggered, overlapping "tree" shape. Start with the largest slice at the bottom and work your way up to smaller slices at the top.
  • Dip and drizzle: Dip the top edge of each slice into the melted chocolate, or use a spoon to drizzle chocolate down the center of your arranged tree to create a "garland" effect.
  • Decorate: Immediately add Christmas sprinkles, edible stars, or pearls before the chocolate sets. Work quickly here since the chocolate starts firming up fast.
  • Set: Refrigerate for 10–15 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm to the touch.
  • Serve: Enjoy right away for the crispest texture. These are best eaten within a few hours of making.

Notes

If you're prepping ahead or worried about browning, brush apple slices lightly with lemon juice after cutting. It won't affect the chocolate at all.
