How Do You Cut Apples for Dipping
I cut my apple slices into wedges before dipping them in chocolate. I think this is a great shape because it's easy to dip the apple slices when they're sliced this way. It's the right size and ratio of chocolate to apple, too.
The Best Apples to Use
You can use any apple you have around, but I prefer green Granny Smith apples. These green apples are my favorite apples! I think the tartness of the green Granny Smith apples pairs perfectly with the smooth and rich dark chocolate flavor. I also used Pink Lady apples in this batch of chocolate-covered apple slices. Granny Smith and Pink Lady apples are both crisp apples that pair perfectly with dark chocolate. I also love honey crisp!
How to Melt Chocolate
You can use a double boiler to melt the chocolate, but I prefer to just use the microwave. Melt the chocolate by microwaving on high at 30-second intervals for 2 minutes. Stir between each interval.
Ingredients
- Apples: You can use any kind of apples. I used granny smith apples and pink lady apples.
- Dark chocolate: I use Lindt 70% dark chocolate.
- Gluten-free Oreo Cookies
- Lemon juice
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
Slice the apples into wedges, drizzle them with lemon juice, and set them aside.
Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and line the apples in a single layer on top. Use a paper towel to blot away excess moisture from the apples. You can use a cloth towel, too.
Flash freeze the apples in the freezer for 15 minutes.
Melt chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt the chocolate by microwaving on high at 30-second intervals for 2 minutes. Stir between each interval.
Take the apple slices out of the freezer and use your hand to dip each apple slice halfway into the chocolate. Lay each apple slice on the parchment-lined cookie sheet after dipping it in the melted chocolate.
Sprinkle with crushed gluten-free oreo cookies.
Hint: Make sure to dip apple slices at least halfway into the melted chocolate.
Toppings
- Caramel Apple - add a drizzle of caramel sauce on top of these chocolate-dipped apples to make them similar to caramel apples. Then you'll have caramel apple slices!
- Mini marshmallows - love this twist! The mini marshmallows pair perfectly with apple cider.
- Chocolate chips - add chocolate chips like semi-sweet chocolate chips or white chocolate chips. You can also try dark chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips.
- Shredded Coconut - coconut flakes on top of the chocolate apple slices make a fun treat!
- Drizzles - try a white chocolate drizzle or caramel drizzles on top.
- Nuts - try macadamia nuts, almonds, or walnuts as a topping.

- Fork: you can also use a lollipop stick or wooden popsicle sticks.

How long do chocolate-covered apples last?
These chocolate-dipped apple slices last about three days in the refrigerator. Make sure to store them in an airtight container. The lemon juice will prevent the apples from browning.
Top tip
Make sure to dry the apples with a paper towel thoroughly before dipping them in chocolate.
